Van Buskirk Article - The Inaugural Newsletter Issue I, our premier newsletter! The mission of Faith of Our Fathers is to bring revival to America by teaching Americans the true and inspiring story of our godly heritage. In the same way that studying Fox's Book of Martyrs inspires Christians of all ages who are being persecuted, studying our nation's godly heritage can inspire Americans to renew their faith. Consider the story
of Jedediah Smith, this month's biography. Famous for being the first
(white) man to cross the Rocky Mountains both ways, the story of his
Christian faith is inspiring even today. As he explored the areas of
the West, Smith filled his journal describing the wonders of God's creation.
Smith's letters home to his relatives reflect his faith. In one he wrote
that, "Jesus is always entreating us with His love, and uses every
means except compulsion to bring us to Him, that we may have life more
abundantly." (For more information about Jedediah Smith, visit
our website and click on Biography) During the Revolutionary War, James Caldwell, "the rousing Gospel preacher," served as chaplain of the American forces and was thoroughly hated by the British. During his absence his wife was killed and the parsonage and church burned, but even these disasters didn't break his spirit. At the battle of Morristown, finding men in want of wadding (packing material for cannon shots,) he galloped to the Presbyterian Church and brought back a quantity of Watt's psalm and hymnbooks. He distributed the pages among the soldiers. "Now," he cried, "put Watts into them, boys!" President Bush is taking some grief for the relatively public way in which he lives his faith. Imagine violating the strict separation of church and state for a President to publicly proclaim Jesus Christ as his Savior! Imagine the nerve! But as much as the liberal left would like to make this out as something unusual, the fact of the matter is that George Bush is the rule rather than the exception. Soon after George
Washington was inaugurated President, he gave a reception where there
were a number of notable guests, including the Vice President, several
foreign ministers, Cabinet Members and the Speaker of the House. They
discovered no minister was present and so the President himself gave
the thanks. "And may that Being who is supreme over all, the Patron of Order, the Fountain of Justice, and the Protector in all ages of the world of virtuous liberty, continue His blessing upon this nation and its Government and give it all possible success and duration consistent with the ends of His providence." John Adams, March 4, 1797 "It must be felt that there is no national security but in the nation's humble, acknowledged dependence upon God and His overruling providence." Franklin Pierce, March 4, 1853 "I have taken the solemn oath of office on that passage of Holy Writ wherein it is asked: 'What doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?' This I plight to God and country" Warren G. Harding, March 4, 1921 For a complete list of inaugural quotes, visit the essay section of our website and click on Inaugural Quotes. General Charles Lee during the Revolutionary War scoffed with much profanity at a resolution of Congress appointing a day of fasting and prayer to obtain the favor of Heaven on their cause. Lee had been trained in war with the armies of Europe and apparently placed more trust in force rather than God. "Heaven," he said, "was ever found favorable to strong battalions." Later, he had an occasion to leave the Continental Army and its headquarters at Morristown and stopped at an inn at Baskenridge. Believing there was not a British regiment within twenty limes, he took only a small guard, thinking himself secure. Unfortunately, a Tory had discovered where the general was to lodge and rode 18 miles in the night to inform the redcoats of his location. They lost no time in preparing to capture the celebrated American general. The next morning, Gen. Lee found the house surrounded by a company of British dragoons, and he was captured. Apparently Heaven
wasn't on his side
